and more.. |
So season 3 is almost upon us, which means Season 2 DVD is ripe for releasing, which NBC have quickly done. First and foremost I have to admit to being one of the few who liked season 2, It's not as great as the first season I'll admit - but I attribute this more to do with the behind scenes because of the writers strike, rather than the creators and writers. The main problem this season had, was the weakness of the new chracters it introduced, Especially Monica and to a lesser extent Maya (her powers are a bit naff - even if they are effective and deadly) - but even then that's only because Syler takes a vested intrest in her. Sylar, sans powers is not quite as interesting - however the caged animal type character works well and Zachary Quinto is as ever brilliant and watchable. The only new character that is refreshing is Kristen Bells' Elle, she mirrors clair's character a little, not in personality but in what could have happened, had the company got hold of her and her powers earlier, cos clearly Elle is mad, albeit slight adorable at times. Like last season we get a flash back to previous events that are only referenced to earlier on in the series, this works pretty well and reveals the plot points that make our understanding of characters motivations all the more clearer. Hiro again shine's Masi Oka excels in his character, and is always the right side of comedic setup without going over the edge, its hard to believe that Masi was making 3d meshes and things for ILM less than three years ago! It was also nice to see Alias' David Anders join the show, especially as Hiro's one time hero Takezo Kensei, he plays the part well - and is the yang to Hiro's ying, his character growth proving the most interesting of the lot. Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) is once again, slowly showing his true potential, this feels a little like a rehash of last year, where he was only beginning to understand his powers - and it would now be nice for him to show off a little (ok, he does toward the end I guess). Nathan(Adrian Pasdar) is the one who gets a little short changed this season, the only character growth we get off him is bitter rejection - but you know he does provide the big cliffhanger for the season, so I suppose I can let that go. Mohinder's character seems to make odd and unfathomobile choices this season, it should work well with him being forced to choose side and unable see which is good and evil, however never seem to work properly and goes against the grain of the character and his personality, of course this was probably intentional but they could have done more with it. Clair (Hayden Panettiere) and HRG man return to a semi-normal life and to be honest Clair is rather boring, at least compared to her adopted father, who goes to great lengths to protect and try to survive in the real paper retail world (with deadly/comic results). There you have it season 2 of Heroes, it's not as good as season 1 - but then it's not as bad as Lost's season 2. It still really enjoyable television and only suffers from such a high bar that the first season set and the writers strike that cut it short. The special features are numerous on here and scattered across the 4 discs, none of them are earth shattering to be sure. The alternative ending is fine but really isn't an ending but shows perhaps what we could have expected with the rest of season two and the virus arc. There are some good featurettes and documentaries on here and breakdowns on the scenes. I found the Takezo Kense faux documentary to least enjoyable and cringeworth at times but it was still watchable. Roll on season 3.... |
