I enjoyed the first Lost Boys, it came out in what I like to call the Spielberg era, you know The Goonies, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and so on and so forth - It managed to combine a lot of interesting themes, and also be able to Funny and Scary at the same time and appeal to the teenage market. Corey Haim and Corey Feldman were at the top of their game, and the music/album was listened to long after the film left the cinema. This direct to video sequel however, is nothing short of a cash tie-in that's too little, too late. It's trying to be cool and scary but just comes off a plain dumb. The whole story is just a series of events that just follow one another with no development to the lead characters Chris Emerson & Nicole Emerson, one minute the sister is fighting her urges and the next she's in bed with the lead Vampire. .... if your desperate for the '30' second Feldman / Haim action..... | Keiffer's brother Angus Sutherland is brought in as the lead vampire for a tenuous link to the previous film; however it's obvious why he's not as famous as his brother. To be honest I don't even know if he's a good actor or not as the script really doesn’t give him any movement to grow. There's no purpose to the Vampires and the film just rehashes to the previous film, but without any slow progression from Human to Vampire. We also feel removed from the characters, and everything happens so fast, that by the end we feel no different then we do at the beginning. To make up for the lack of Plot, Character or development, the director decides to chuck in loads of Gore, indeed we have vampires having their guts ripped out and heads cut off. The prologue to the movie is even strange and gore soaked, with the vampires arriving at a sea coast mansion and the owner comes out to face them, and it's revealed that he is in fact a vampire - and then said teenage vampires then dispose of him.. No exposition, no more reason for this, it just is... OK, I've gone through this without mentioning Feldman, to be honest apart from the annoying voice he adopts (was it really that gruff in the original?) he's the best thing about the whole production - it's just a pity he's not used more effectively. Corey's Haim's cameo is literally that "a Cameo" - not even in the main film itself but on the credits - ?? It's a brilliant cameo admittedly, if this had in fact been the main plot of the film, it may have served the whole production better. As it is, this is something to avoid, perhaps just rent if your desperate for the 30 second Feldman / Haim action..... |
