CLONE WARS
Written by Mike

It's been three years since Revenge of the Sith (yeah, it's gone by quick). Most people were satisfied with that film, believing George Lucas had finally delivered on a 'proper' Star Wars film - indeed it had it's moments, but it was still style over substance and sub par acting all around, thank you very much.

Now we have another Star Wars flick - this time in the CGI animated form - supposedly set in the Clone Wars series from Cartoon Network and before Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: Clone Wars tries to bring in new characters and re-introduce us to our fantasy world.

Unfortunately Clone Wars fails to represent either, the animation is bland, the direction flat and lots swirly-ever-so-glitzy special effects do not, a good film make.

For a start we have Obi-Wan and Anakin, the relationship is still dull and as lifeless as the one from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the sith. In all honesty the Character of Anakin here appears to be much more fun and relatable, than the Film Version (Poor Hayden Christensen - he really isn't that bad of an Actor, it's just lucas isn't that much of a director).

The rest of the cast, is as I said lifeless and dull, even Christopher Lee can't save it.

Anakin's new apprentice is nice enough, but not memorable enough for me to applaud anything we've
seen on screen. The barebones plot is hardly exciting, and trying to 'humanize' Jabba the Hutt is both, a failure and disrespectful of the original movie character.

Did I hate the movie? No, it does what it sets out to do, entertain the kiddies, My little boy loved it and asked endless questions about when the series will begin. So, for it's target audience they perhaps got everything right.

However, I think the biggest injustice served nut this film, is that really its a three episode tv story and nothing particularly galactic threatening happens throughout. Its like the Star Trek: Insurrection of Movies.. If they had perhaps showed us a different side of the clone wars, and showed why Anakin and Obi-Wan were heroes of the Clone Wars that would have made a much better story. These things were only alluded to in the movies and would have been nice to see fleshed out onscreen.

So, all I can say is - well its going to be a long time before we see any other Star Wars themed movies in the cinema - so grab your chance, just put your 8 year old podracer goggles on before you go into the theatre.
