Jumper is probably every teenager’s wet dream, being able to teleport anywhere in the world, without any sort of repercussions. In fact it’s the main protagonist’s dream-come reality, David (played by Darth.. Sorry Hayden Christensen) is enjoying this new found life, after leaving his old one behind years before. However it’s not long before we find out that it’s not all flowers and sunshine when David starts getting pursued by Roland. Part of a group called the Paladins who have been chasing after Jumpers for centuries. This movie is based on a set of adolescent novels, and really doesn’t try to raise much past its target audience. However Hayden is likeable as the hero David and I can even put up with Rachel bilson as the love interest, if you want a watchable turn your brain off film you can’t go wrong. It just needed a few more twists and turns, and perhaps more back-story on the Jumpers. Also the film gears up for a sequel and leaves the ending a little rushed, perhaps if more time was paid on the first film in the ‘franchise’ we would have been treated to a five star movie rather than a three star one. Samuel L Jackson plays Samuel L Jackson, although he is streetwise and gritty as always he does get down on the whole evil thing, and starts the movie off gutting one hapless Jumper. Again Mr Jackson is underused in this film, although his whole preacher persona works well “Only God should have the power to be all places at all times” – creepy. I guess this is just one of those movies where you can’t really say anything too bad about it, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Perhaps its sequel will rectify that? |
