SYNOPSIS
Still reeling from the shocking death of Stephen and the stunning betrayal of Helen (Juliet Aubrey, The Constant Gardener), Nick (Douglas Henshall, French Film, Dorian Gray) must fight to re-focus his embattled team, now reduced to two members, student palaeontologist Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and zoologist Abby (Hannah Spearritt, Agent Cody Banks, S Club7). Cutter’s crew is joined by some new recruits in the form of maverick policeman Danny Quinn (Jason Flemyng), sparky Egyptologist Sarah Page (Laila Rouass), and the new leader of the ARC’s security forces, Captain Becker (Ben Mansfield). But the anomalies continue to present an unrelenting series of threats, including such terrifying ancient creatures as Giganotosaurus (a truly terrifying predator, bigger even than the Tyrannosaurus Rex), Pristichampus (a creature which strikingly resembles the ancient Egyptian crocodile demon, Ammut) and Dracorex. As deadlier creatures continue to rampage through the anomalies, the cloak of secrecy behind which the team has been working is in jeopardy. Questions are being asked and the conspiracy spreads its net wide. If something is not done quickly, the team’s future is threatened—not to mention the future of humankind itself.
REVIEW
Primeval was borne out of a need to get on the Doctor Who Sci-fi wagon; fortunately for ITV it was also quite good. Yes, some people may scoff at us 'serious science fiction types' enjoying the lowest common denominator TV series, but you just can't help it.
They've actually improved the effects this season, and given it a longer run - giving it time to get its story arc going...
New characters are introduced and other ones... well you might just have to watch the DVD to find out! In all honesty though, a TV show not scared to kill of characters makes it much more intense in some the hairy moments - when it's all feasible that the character might not actually make it to the next episode.
There's some new interesting faces this series, with Nick Cutter(Douglas Henshall) being replaced by Danny Quinn (Jason Flemyng) - a hardnosed ex copper who's a little more action orientated than ol' Nick (who to be honest looked a little bored this series!).
Then we have a new archaeologist on the scene called Sarah Page, who to be honest doesn't actually do that much. There's also some new bad guys - some sort of anti-arc people with their own agenda.
There seems to be a shift from the 'science-y' first series, and now creatures and people get 'offed without much worry about the problems of wibbly wobbly timey wimey (sorry Doc). Still we had enough of star trek and it's destroying of plot with techno babble. As long as time travel serves the plot and not logic and science who are we to quibble?
Overall this is an enjoyable series, but just don't expect to get any Babylon 5/Battlestar Galactica type arc/continuity storylines, and you'll be fine..
