MIDDLEMAN 1.4 THE MANICOLD TELEPORTATION CONUNDRUM |

If it weren’t for the spoilers, it would be possible to condense the 43 minutes running time of the Middleman into two very dense paragraphs about the shock abduction by teleportation of several visibly challenged but upwardly mobile (even before the teleport) individuals who turn out to have otherworldly problems including an unhealthy fascination for jewellery. Dub-dub (Wendy Watson, alias the trainee Middle.. person) is having a bad time in her personal life, having her ex publish their break-up video on a You-Tube-a-like website. Coping as best she can while a on absent mindedly going Jack Bauer on an interrogation training droid with a phone book, Wendy’s friends - who think she’s in denial – point her in the direction of a Dr Phil-u-like TV psychologist who (of course) turns out to be the bad guy and is eventually despatched by ray-gun on his private hunting preserve in the hills. (Just by that rock that Kirk jumps all over when Star Trek has the fight with the crocodile alien) - OK, maybe you’d need a bit more space, because I left out the lovely (yuck) Ida (Mary Pat Gleason) being, well, Ida and some nice one-liners like the BTRS detector (Beyond The Realm of Science) which kicks off when something.. beyond the realm of science happens. Middleman is a nice package of quickfire plotting, nods to all the popular TV shows, and wry commentary on ‘yoof’ society, or whatever passes for that in the States. I still like it and I hope it makes it to the UK soon! |
