Torchwood returns, after the lacklustre First series what can we really look forward to, for this series.
Well for a start of we have James Marsters as the eponymous Captain John. Basically he's playing Spike from Buffy sans blonde hair, of course this works brilliantly with his interactions with Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) who is essentially Russell T Davies' take on Angel from Buffy. To be honest Torchwood needed some sort of big bad ala Buffy to give the Team a focus, its just a pity we won’t be seeing the Captain for a little while yet. In all other respects the show has improved, although this is hard to judge in one episode, furtherepisodes show that they are a least attempting characterisation, also humour plays a big part in this episode - and I did find myself laughing a various comments. The story itself is nonsensical, with no real plot - this doesn't detract from the episode though as the story is not paramount. although if they can't expect us to just sit through these episodes without some sort of plot constantly and hopefully this will improve as the series progresses. There also seems to be less of the obligatory swearing and sexual references that plagued last year’s series, although they still pop up from time to time. All in all, a good episode, nothing to rival the best of Doctor Who, but much better than most of last years offerings. |
